Read of the month:
The book I am finding most intriguing recently speaking about colleges is titled Colleges That Change Lives by Loren Pope. What makes this reference book so different is that Pope explores 40 colleges that may be off the beaten path, but deserve a very close look. Pope is not looking for the prestige or reputation of the school from the standpoint of statistics. Pope looks at the school and its effect upon students. Are students really learning? Are they encouraged to become leaders? Is the school bringing out the potential of each student? You won’t find the Ivey’s in this book. But, you will find best kept secrets which are worth a look. www.ctcl.com
The teenage years are filled with turmoil and a sense of bewilderment for both parent and child. The book The Primal Teen: What the New Discoveries About the Teenage Brain Tell Us About Our Kids by Barbara Strauch is one that I highly recommend. Now there is evidence that your teen is actually going through a change and it isn't just the mood swings. As an educator and mother of a teen, it is amazing to watch the transformation from child to adult. The constant struggle between exerting independence and wanting to be taken care of is a right of passage we all need to experience. This book has given me greater insight as to the physical transformation of the brain and how it affects learning. As we continuously design and amend the curriculum, this research will be utilized to create the best instructional methods for your teen. Broward County library has many copies of this book and I encourage you to read it and share your thoughts on this site.
