Students today have many college choices after high school – public, private, large research universities, smaller liberal arts colleges, arts colleges.  In making choices the philosophy of Conservatory Preparatory High School is best replicated in smaller liberal arts colleges, including:

  • Professors who teach classes incorporating cooperative education, working together with the students encouraging students to think and write
  • Professors who have relationships with students outside of the class as mentors and friends
  • Opportunities for many students to participate in extra-curricular activities
  • Focus on each student

At Conservatory Prep High School teachers work with students from ninth - twelfth grades o to make sure they are as prepared as possible for their future college plans, including focus on academic core courses, a strong commitment to extra-curricular activities, including community service, and student and parent college information sessions.
Preparation for College
The following are some suggestions to help you throughout high school in preparing for college:

  • Take strong academic courses and do the best you can in these courses.
  • Get involved in activities, either in school or in your community.  Find one or two activities you really enjoy and get very involved.  Level of involvement is more important than number of activities.
  • Keep a regular record of your activities, volunteer work and employment.  File all awards, test results, record of activities, etc. in one file.
  • Start researching colleges and universities.  Attend college fairs and presentations in your city, attend college representative visits at your high school if possible, and check out college websites.
  • Take the PSAT (good preparation for the SAT) and the PLAN (preparation for the ACT).
  • Begin to take the SAT and ACT tests in the middle of your junior year.  Take the tests once or twice more if you would like to improve your scores.
  • In tenth or eleventh grade register for June SAT Subject Tests if you are very strong in certain subjects (i.e. taking those AP courses).
  • Think some about future career options – what interests you?  Watch adults in your daily life, do they have a career which interests you?  If so, talk to them about it, or read about that career.  You have plenty of time to decide your career, but the more you know about different careers, the easier it will be to decide.
  • Plan your summer.  Consider a summer course at a college, working or volunteering.
  • READ, READ, READ!!!  This is great preparation for academic work in your junior and senior year, the SAT and ACT tests, and college.
Enjoy High School!  Prepare for college, but don’t stress about it.  It will all work out.
