Representing Nigeria at the FIMUN

Conservatory Prep students will be representing Nigeria at the Florida International Model United Nations (FIMUN) March 6 – 8, 2015 in Miami. Students spent part of their vacation taking part in a Model UN boot camp with Dr. Weiner. The students learned about the history and function of the United Nations, how to research their topics, write a position paper and understand the current issues Nigeria faces. During the next couple of weeks, students will hone their speaking and debate skills and learn parliamentary procedures.

Nigeria was chosen to complement the African Studies curriculum. Currently, the students are learning about Nigeria and in particular studying the life of Fela Kuti, the individual who used music as the power to influence change. Students are also learning about Nigeria through research, art and theater. By adding training for the Model UN, we are providing yet another means for students to fully understand and appreciate Nigeria’s accomplishments and the challenges it still faces.

In the past, Conservatory Prep has successfully sent delegations to the Model UN at Yale, William and Mary, Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University. We look forward to the start of a new team with our sights on traveling next year to some of the larger Model UN programs. This is a great opportunity for our students and we encourage all who are interested to join.
